ABOUT THE TITANS
Club History:
Thetford Titans was formed during February 07 after meetings between
RFL
officials Carl Harrison and Ian Reynolds. It was the brain child of Carl
and
after confirming local interest, gathered the support of two good friends
Ian (aka Burt) and Aarron Waters to all become founding members of the
Titans.
Thetford has had a strong Rugby League history with its previous club
South
Norfolk Saints being a real success both on and off the field. Winning
the
local league on more than one occasion and having the honour of having
one
of its players selected for England Lionharts, Dave Horne. Due to the
success of the club its driving force coach John Evans gained a strong
reputation within the game and was awarded a full time position at Cambridge
University. He balanced the two for a number of years before becoming
to
much as Rugby League at Varsity level was becoming a real big deal.
On John Evans making the tough decision to leave, the club had nobody
step
up to take the reigns and it looked as though Rugby Leagu in this part
of
Norfolk was to be no more.
Having played under John Evans and assistant Dave Arnold a few years
before
Carl Harrison knew the potential the club had and after meetings with
the
Thetford RUFC Commitee knew it would work. Rather than re-form the old
Club
the new Commitee decided out of respect for South Norfolk Saints and all
the
great people who put their time into the club it would be better to start
a
fresh.
The Titans were named down to the strong links with the town and the
Rugby
Club of Thetford and because Burt had always dreamed of being a Titan
lol!
The first Season as expected was a little tricky, especially the first
few
games. With very little funding the first few games were played in kit
on
loan from a local RAF station.
The team itself was prodominantley made up of three groups Thetford Union
Players, Bury St Edmunds Union Players and RAF Personnel. At first this
made
it a difficult task to knit the team together and the first result showed
this with a loss to St Ivves away from home. Head Coach Carl knew something
needed to change and the appointment of Captain Keith Rix was a real turning
point. Not affiliated to any of the three groups and with a barbaric
presence on and off the field the team soon began to bond and results
followed.
The first season proved a real success getting some great results on
the
field with a notable victory in a friendly over the RAF Regiment Corps
Team
along with some big wins in the league over Greenwich, St Ivves and
Colchester. Along with this there were in total over 40 players pull on
a
Titans Jersy summer 2007 and a far greater number attend training.
